No More Books At The Newport Public Library

The First Century B.C. Roman philosopher Cicero wrote of how a library was one of the two most significant things in a man’s life. Yet the libraries Cicero knew were quite different than what society has known in recent decades – and even more so as the world enters the ebook age. That’s what is taking place at the Newport Beach Public Library in Newport Beach, Calif., states the Los Angeles Times. Keeping the exact same bookless library features

More and more in the public have been interested in the idea of book-free libraries considering it’s becoming much more costly to print books and Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nooks have become very popular. The publisher, marketing, printing, pre-production, wholesaler, author royalty and retailer price considerations all demand a piece of the pie in the traditional book publishing market. It is not complicated to produce an electronic book. It costs much less as well. There will only be resemblance in the Newport Beach Public Library in that it will look like one when entering. An information kiosk can be available just as before. You will get a computer instead of a real person. The bookshelves can be gone, which is where the reality of the library for the future sets in. In order to give electronic book readers a place to study, it could be maintained with access to wireless internet. The kiosk software will allow patrons to order printed books if they are required. There can be a locker, similar to DVDs and Blu-rays from Netflix in the mail, where you are able to pick up books after a few days of ordering.

Readers changing with economy

San Antonio’s University of Texas and Stanford University located in California both have great college libraries. When it comes to bookless libraries, they seem ahead of most. The library was able to create more study room rather than the books for engineering and technology. The books were changed with over 18,000 e-journal subscriptions and 425,000 e-books. A quarter of the books at Stanford, about 18,000, have been swapped out as of 2010 summer. The reason of book-free libraries is to keep up with patrons. The needs are always changing. There are more individuals going to libraries for Wi-Fi connection and a quiet study place than anything else. Newport Beach Public Library studies confirmed this. Thus, the idea of the Netflix-style delivery system was born. Not all staff at the library agrees with the change, though.

“That caused me the most angst,” said Newport Beach City Manager Dave Kiff, who helped develop the library’s bookless plan. “People identify (book) stacks with the library.”

Kiff knows that you will need to change with the times though rather than staying 30 years behind. The Los Angeles Times spoke with Nancy Acone on the board of Newport Beach Friend of the Library who said it is important to adapt.

“You don’t want to be like the railroads and go out of business,” she said.
